What did you think about the reading "The Uses of the Underclass in America"? Do you agree that the poor hold some or all of these functions in our society? How would our society be different if there weren't any poor people? What are some other negative aspects of our society that you think might serve a larger function for society as a whole? ( i dont have the reading ,but i will post students answer so you can write something smiler and agree or disagree with a student respond)(2 paragraphs one answer the Q and the other reply for the student )

  • Risha Shah Messages: 8 Yes people do have the right to judge others, but it should not be to an extent of stereotyping many people into one single group ,without evidence of their behavior or values. I have seen situations where people that have been labeled undeserving are denied jobs, due to their background. But i dont think that is the right thing to do. By giving them a job, we are not only helping them stand up on their feet, but are also guiding them to have a bright future that betters our society. By banishing them from jobs, is just causing them to do illegal things and hurt themselves. I believe that if we have the chance to better our society by helping others, in need, stand up on their feet and be able to support their families, then we should. I dont think its okay for society to blame the poor for high crime rates, and label them as villains if there is no proof of their behavior. By labeling people as poor and undeserving, society is also hurting its government, since many of them are not allowed to vote or choose not to vote. If we did not have poor people, this would lead to positive and negative affects. Some positive affects would be that women would be more careful in getting pregnant, there would be more creative income opportunities most importantly there would be hope for them on living a decent life. Some negative affects could be that, since everyone would have a decent income, society could become very competitive. This could make people do harsh things for them to reach the top of the societal hierarchy. The poor people in our society have been labeled and everyone is convinced that they are undeserving. However, some of these people could be our future leaders if we give them a chance. I dont think that they should be labeled as undeserving because some are actually trying to be better and do better things. The fact that society has already labeled them, causes them to react in the same ways they are stereotyped for because its the only thing they think they are capable of doing. But if society gives them a chance in coming forward, then people will realize that some of them are capable of being great human beings and making our society a better and safer place.

  • Susan I thought the reading was interesting. There were some points that I was already aware of and some that took me by surprise. One of which was point #9 where he talks about `institutional scapegoating` and how those that are poor are considered intellectually challenged (7th ed, pg 347). That idea has never occurred to me or have I ever heard of people thinking that way. I do agree that the poor hold all the functions listed in society. Without having any poor people, society would be different. On the positive side, one can assume that everyone is educated, has jobs, is paid well enough that they can support their families or just live comfortably, and people are thinking of the consequences of their actions and acting accordingly. Which if all of this is true, there would be no need for the Salvation Army, those trying to raise funds for the poor, and if everyone is living comfortably I suppose there would not be crime and therefore no need for law enforcement. Yet even so, who is to say that because there is no poor, the upper class then would not belittle the middle class then in the same way that the lower class was treated. Also with less purposes such as law enforcement, etc, then are jobs more limited which then in turn would cause the number of people being born needed to be limited to accommodate? Going further with this, then would it be harder to move in and out cities since any addition would cause a strain on that population? Another negative aspect of society that benefit us is having criminals. The people who are labeled as the people you do not want to be become and because of so, we are taught what is right and wrong by our society's standards. How can one be taught what is `right` and what is `wrong` if there is no `wrong`. The same is true for seeing the repercussions of young parents, those who smoked most of their lives, alcoholics, drug abusers, etc. All of which, again, aid in labeling for us `right` and `wrong`. I agree with that Risha said about if there are no poor people then society would become competitive. If spaces are limited then of course the best of the bunch would get the allowed slots. Although we want to believe that competition won't be so harsh, when times are desperate, so are the people.

  • I think the article brought up some interesting points. The argument for the underclass people in America is one that I think will never go away. In every society there are rich people and poor people. It's the way it is. In the United States Capitalism rules the economy. It's survival of the fittest. Those who can perform and earn their way to the top generally do because of their skill set, motivation, and opportunity. The way I see it, lower class people in the United States either do not take advantage of their opportunity, are not motivated enough to do something about their situation, or simply do not possess the same skills as other people. I don't think anyone wants to be poor. If people had the choice I would contest that most people would choose to be wealthy. However, a lot of the time the poor just accept the fact that they are poor and continue to lead a lifestyle like that not doing anything to change it. Some may argue it is not possible. It is possible to rise out of the lower class and find your way to living a prosperous life. We usually see these as a "rags to riches" stories and consider these people as inspirations. This is good for them and those who are able to do so deserve some credit by rising up and changing their life. It's no different than anyone else who becomes successful. Those with the motivation, drive, and skill set will rise to the top. Those without these things will sink to the bottom. There are a lot of people who start out in upper class families living on the success of their family and then do nothing with themselves. They lack the skill set and determination that their family ahead of them had. These are the stories we hear that have a story line like, "He/She had everything and threw it all away." Society would be very different without poor people. If everyone was rich, who would do the lower class work? Who'd pick the fruits and vegetables and work in the fields? Who would be our janitors? Who would be our restaurant workers? Who would work all these jobs? Surely if you had money you wouldn't want to work jobs like this. The fact of the matter becomes that society would not function without lower class people. It's the way it is. People can argue all they want but the lower class is an integral part to society and necessary for the way it functions. To comment on what Risha said about competition I would have to disagree somewhat. Society is already competitive at least in the United States. That's what our economy is based on. Personal gains based on your own personal work. The State doesn't control who you become, you do. The competition is already there. Perhaps without poor people the competition would just be heightened because the focus would turn to that rather than trying to fix the poverty problem in the country.

  • para 1: system supports rich person and allows them to become richer whereas suppresses poor, in most cases the rich people abuse the system and in many the poor are used as a scapegoat. But you can never have a society where there are no poor as everyone has different appetite and everyone has different motivation and ability to work. Some Americans are less motivated to earn and progress and are hence left behind as poor or some don`t have such mental and physical capabilites that allow them to progress.Leaders are the one who take the lions share. What I think is that in our society, the main key leadership roles i.e. chairman etc are controlled by rich which employ poor people to work for them and with the help of the system they take the major share of their earning and giving them only what they need to survive .If there were no poor people in our society, the rich would have been not as civilized as they are now because there will be a lot of competition in between the people and they would have to ultimately hire people from 3rd world poor countries to do certain type of tasks. As a society, we stereotype in many parts of life. I have personally seen people rejecting some people from some specific ethnic or religious background some offers that they would freely offer to others. So I think it is the main issue with our society that needs to be stressed and is already being addressed though.

  • PARA 1 AGAIN ,PLEASE IGNORE THE UP ONE::::::::::::The reading critically highlights the major issue faced in America because of Capitalism. • Reply to S:I would like to comment on what S said about competition I will like to add some point over here. No doubt US economy is very competitive but why do US allows immigration even now, why do they allow 3rd world people to come and become US citizen. Why do we have lottery immigration scheme, a reason may be we need more man power but we focus mainly on 3rd world only because most people there are poor and they will be ready to do the task over here which we need the poor people to do it .

  • The reading critically highlights that in our society, every class has its specific role and poor class is very much important for our society. As the capitalist system supports rich person and allows them to become richer whereas suppresses poor, in most cases the rich people abuse the system and in many the poor are used as a scapegoat. But you can never have a society where there are no poor as everyone has different appetite and everyone has different motivation and ability to work. As a society, we stereotype in many parts of life. For example if a poor person goes into a branded shop the shop keepers won`t entertain him and I think that it the major problem which should be stressed on. I would like to comment on what S said about competition I will like to add some point over here. No doubt US economy is very competitive but why do US allows immigration even now, why do they allow 3rd world people to come and become US citizen.
