  • Introduce the topic for analysis and the potential impact for public health nursing, include background for the issue and the purpose of the paper !!!HANDWASHING !!!! EXAMPLE Introduction A stroke is an interruption of the blood supply to any part of the brain. It is sometimes called a “brain attack”. A stroke happens when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted because a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or bursts open. If blood flow is stopped for longer than a few seconds, the brain cannot get blood and oxygen. Brain cells can die, causing permanent damage. There are two major types of stroke: ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke. Ischemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain is blocked by a blood clot. Hemorrhagic strokes, on the other hand, occurs when a blood vessel in part of the brain becomes weak and bursts open, causing blood to leak into the brain (Hoch, 2010).

  • Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. People of all ages and backgrounds can have a stroke. In 2006, 137,000 people in the United States died of stroke, accounting for nearly 1 in every 17 deaths. Only heart disease and cancer killed more people. Someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds. Every three or four minutes, someone dies of stroke. It is the third leading cause of death for both men and women. In 2006, out of every 10 deaths due to stroke were in women. Every year, about 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke. About 610,000 of these are first or new strokes
    User_34712 | Apr 07, 2021, 02:07 AM
  • About 185,000 people who survive a stroke go on to have another. Ischemic strokes, which occur when blood clots block the blood vessels to the brain, are the most common type of stroke, representing about 85% of all strokes. In 2009, stroke cost the United States $68.9 billion. This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and missed days of work. Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability (CDC, 2010). Stroke is among the five leading causes of death for people of all races and ethnicities.
    User_34712 | Apr 07, 2021, 02:07 AM
  • But the risk of having a stroke varies. Compared to whites, African Americans are at nearly twice the risk of having a first stroke. Hispanic Americans’ risk falls between the two. Moreover, African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to die following a stroke than are whites (Lloyd-Jones, et al., 2009). Although stroke can happen to anyone, certain risk factors can increase chances of a stroke.
    User_34712 | Apr 07, 2021, 02:08 AM
  • However, studies show that up to 80% of strokes can be prevented by working with a healthcare professional to reduce personal risk. It is important to manage personal risk and know how to recognize and respond to stroke signs and symptoms (National Stroke Association, 2011). With this in mind, the goals of the Power to End Stroke campaign are: (1) to create a “movement” around the serious health disparity issue of a stroke in African Americans and to drive the message that stroke is largely preventable; (2) to increase awareness of high blood pressure and diabetes as risk factors; and (3) to promote adherence to primary and secondary prevention guidelines. !!!!!THIS IS THE WAY THE INTRODUCTION NEED TO BE. • These are responses from others and now they want to response to their work......... What factors in the scenario demonstrate an increased risk for suicide? Factors in this scenario that demonstrate an increased risk for suicide include Joe being recently divorced and him discharging his firearm for the first time in 14 years. According to Buttaro, risk factors for suicide include unemployment, marital isolation, exposure to suicidal behavior, and alcohol or drug use (2017). The patient has also been complaining of insomnia which may indicate some overwhelming stressors the patient may be experiencing. 2. What should you include in a suicide risk assessment?
    User_34712 | Apr 15, 2021, 07:39 AM
  • There are four components to a thorough suicide assessment. This includes thoughts of suicide, plan to commit suicide, means to complete the plan, and intention to follow through with the plan (Buttaro et al., 2017). It is crucial to first understand the thoughts one may have relating to death to determine the level of risk. Thoughts of death are common in individuals with depression. Anyone with MDD must be carefully assessed. Patients who have thought of taking their own life answer more cautiously, mindful of the potential reaction from the provider (Buttaro et al., 2017).
    User_34712 | Apr 15, 2021, 07:39 AM
  • . During the appointment, Joe states that it’s hard for him to talk about how he is feeling and begins to cry. Taking the opportunity to ask Joe about his intentions, what specific questions could you ask? Examples of questions the nurse practitioner can ask Joe during the appointment include: “What you’re telling me sounds difficult to manage. Can you tell me how you feel about your own life?” “When did you begin to experience these thoughts and feeling?” “How frequently have you had these thoughts and feelings?” “Has it been so bad that you’ve had thoughts of ending your own life?” “Do you have a plan for suicide?”
    User_34712 | Apr 15, 2021, 07:40 AM
  • Okay friend thank you
    Prof1990 | Apr 15, 2021, 07:40 AM
  • 4. You understand that the best predictor of suicide risk is a history of a previous suicide attempt. When asked, Joe admits to placing one of his firearms in his mouth a few times, indicating that the likelihood of Joe attempting suicide is very high. How should you proceed? Concern for suicide should prompt a referral to a specialty provider. Emergency psychiatric assessment for hospitalization is indicated for individuals at high risk for suicide. Joe admits to placing his firearm in his mouth a few times. This reveals Joe’s attempt for suicide is high. All persons with suicide attempts and threats should be referred to a specialist for a full mental status exam as well as a psychiatric consultation and treatment (Dunphy et al., 2019
    User_34712 | Apr 15, 2021, 07:41 AM
  • 5. Could Joe benefit from a no-suicide contract? I believe that Joe can benefit from a no-suicide contract. Men are four times more likely to complete a suicide attempt (Buttaro et al., 2017). “Contracting for safety” is a therapeutic intervention providers use to manage individuals with thoughts of suicide. It is a promise that the person will not act on his or her thoughts. Joe can benefit from a no-suicide contract since he has had a previous suicide attempt in the past and will help to establish a mindset that it is not okay to die by suicide. If a patient who is considered high risk for suicide cannot make the commitment for a no-suicide contract, immediate hospitalization is necessary (Dunphy et al., 2019).!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THAT IS NUMBER ONE. !!!!!!!!# 2.
    User_34712 | Apr 15, 2021, 07:48 AM
  • #2 What factors in the scenario demonstrate an increased risk for suicide? According to Dunphy et al. (2017), Caucasians are at the highest risk of committing suicide out of all the race and ethnicity group. Also, marital status impacts risk for suicide, which single, divorced, or widowed persons are at higher risk. Hence, Joe being a Caucasian male who is recently divorced puts him at an increased risk for suicide. Moreover, Joe states he recently discharged his firearm for the first time in 14 years working in law enforcement, which could have been stressful. What should you include in a suicide risk assessment? According to Turecki et al., risk of suicide is “influenced by the interaction of a variety of biological, clinical, psychological, social, cultural, and environmental factors” (2019).
    User_34712 | Apr 15, 2021, 07:49 AM
  • Please friend specify which is number 1 and 2
    Prof1990 | Apr 15, 2021, 07:50 AM
  • According to Dunphy et al. (2017), suicide assessment should include the following: 1. Psychiatric evaluation that includes the following: a. Specific psychiatric signs and symptoms b. Psychiatric history, including current treatment c. Past suicidal or other self-injurious behaviors (including intent of such acts) d. Family history of suicide, mental illness, and dysfunction
    User_34712 | Apr 15, 2021, 07:55 AM
  • e. Current psychosocial situation and nature of crisis 2. Inquire about suicidal thoughts, plans, behaviors (elicit presence of suicidal ideation, suicide plan, intent, and lethality of plan including access to weapons, pills) 3. Suicide risk estimation to include demographic factors, major psychiatric syndromes (primary and comorbid conditions), specific psychiatric symptoms, other aspects of psychiatric history and physical illness
    User_34712 | Apr 15, 2021, 07:56 AM
  • During the appointment, Joe states that it’s hard for him to talk about how he is feeling and begins to cry. Taking the opportunity to ask Joe about his intentions, what specific questions could you ask? To further investigate Joe’s intentions, I would ask the following questions: • Can you tell me what you’re feeling? • What has been in your mind?
    User_34712 | Apr 15, 2021, 07:56 AM
  • • How long have you been feeling this way? • Do you have thoughts or plans to harm yourself? • What is the primary reason for self-harming thoughts? • Have you had any suicide attempts in the past? You understand that the best predictor of suicide risk is a history of a previous suicide attempt. When asked, Joe admits to placing one of his firearms in his

  • mouth a few times, indicating that the likelihood of Joe attempting suicide is very high. How should you proceed? According to Harmer et al. (2020), the provider should create a safety plan after the risk assessment is completed including information gathered during the interview. The provider should collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure the plan is specific and personalized for each individual.
    User_34712 | Apr 15, 2021, 07:57 AM
  • In this case, I would refer Joe to a mental health specialist such as a psychiatrist to further evaluate patient’s current state of condition for interventions such as starting antidepressants. Joe should also be referred to a psychologist or therapist for therapy. Could Joe benefit from a no-suicide contract? According to Dunphy et al. (2017), “Contracting for Safety” is often used by providers as a therapeutic intervention. It is not a legal agreement that would put the provider liable for the patient but rather a “promise” between the patient with suicidal ideation and the provider. It is

  • patient but rather a “promise” between the patient with suicidal ideation and the provider. It is reflective of a written commitment that the person will not act on his or her thoughts or carry out the plan for suicide. In this case, Joe will benefit from a no-suicide contract. Joe currently does not have a specific plan and is aware of his “problem”. The contract will allow him to reach out to his provider or mental health specialist in case of an emergency anytime of the day and night as that would be part the agreement.
