Project Summary: It would seem that Oedipus has been doomed, from birth, without much opportunity to change his fate. We don't often view ourselves in this way in modern society, but for this assignment I want you to try, in a two part response. For part one, try to answer the questions that follow: What individuals (or whole populations of people) most resemble Oedipus in having been fated to a specific destiny? How do these individuals resemble Oedipus? What evidence can you offer that their life experience is, like that of Oedipus, fated to a tragic destiny? For part two, answer these questions: How is it that we seem to have completely abandoned the fatalistic vision of human destiny in modern times? Is there any advantage for modern societies to embrace to the fatalism of the Greeks? If so, what is it? If not, why not?
