This short story, set in the village of Barmer, shows a day in the lives of two young girls. A theme of the story is friendship. The friendship between the two girls undergoes a change, and Kapur documents the girls friendship with the literary elements of imagery, symbolism, and conflict. Saraswati and Para are two young girls existing in brutal conditions burdened with the responsibilities of providing water for their husbands. Shared secrets threaten to break their friendship, but their mutual needs for support and existence trumps the threat. The friendship is stronger than outside forces.
