Project Summary: For your first essay, you will be writing a close literary analysis of one of the poems from this week’s reading. Be sure you have read Chapter two closely in Literary Analysis: The Basics by Celena Kusch as she discusses methods for close reading. As Kusch writes, “literary analysis depends on reading and interpreting the individual words of a text” (30). Because poetry is generally a shorter form, every word holds importance as does the grammar, syntax and even the way the author has chosen to lay out the words on the page. Everything on the page is significant, and it is your job to break down and analyze what this significance might be.
