Project Summary: Critique is the practice of identifying assumed truths that we take for granted – such as assumptions that development and underdevelopment are simply matters of wealth and macroeconomic growth – and showing how they are partial, contingent, and thus could always be other than they are. Critique, in other words, shows that what we take for granted is often highly political, and could thus be transformed. The excerpts from Walter Rodney’s How Europe Underdeveloped Africa and George Beckford’s Persistent Poverty provide excellent examples of critique in action.
