Project Summary: A critical determinant of what will occur on the job. An effective manager not only must motivate employees to do their jobs, but to do it well and in a way that is most beneficial to the organization. The human resource manager must design systems that make it more likely that employees will exert effort in these desirable ways. The key is to understand how we can motivate people to engage in behaviors we desire. As we will discuss, several models or theories of motivation have been proposed as a way to accomplish this. No one mode of motivation is guaranteed to work. Examining several models of motivation will provide us with insights into how to motivate people and formulate a set of techniques HR managers could use to develop systems that improve work.
