Project Summary: Final Research Paper COSK 1201 Fall 2015 General guidelines for the essay: 900-1100 words (not including title page and references page. Paper must include an abstract. APA formatting You must use at least 5 sources in your paper. At least 2 of the sources must be sources other than the specific ones that I provided you. These two sources must be books or peer-reviewed journal articles. You may use other types of sources in your paper, but you MUST find on your own and use at least two higher level academic sources (i.e. books and professional journals). The final research paper for this class will focus on some topic related to international students. You can start out the essay with general information about international students to introduce the topic, but you must choose a focus for your essay. There are many, many different possible topics. Here are some ideas: o What are the cultural challenges that international students face? o What are the language challenges that international students face? o How can international students adjust to cultural differences? o What are the best/fastest ways to learn English for social purposes? o What are the best/fastest ways to learn English for academic purposes? o What can international students do to compensate for their developing language ability? o How can universities best provide language support for international students? o How can international students understand and respond to racist attitudes in the U.S.? o How can international students develop the necessary study and organizational skills to be successful in American universities? o How can international students handle homesickness and depression? o What are components of the most successful English language programs? o How can college professors provide support and encouragement for international students? For more ideas, please check this list: https://jistudents.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/list-of-topics-journal-of-international-students.pdf You must get approval for your topic! As soon as you decide on a topic, you should check your topic with me as scheduled so you I can approve it, help you focus it, and make sure you are on the right track. Deciding on a topic and getting approval for it will help you to avoid wasting time. You must have a topic by Tuesday, November 3. Schedule for writing the research paper: Tuesday, November 3: Decide on a topic for your paper. In order to decide on a topic, you should skim through some of the articles that I provided for you, and you should do a little searching on your own using your more specific topic ideas. Thursday, November 5: Turn into Blackboard your research logs for your 2 sources (Remember that these must be outside of the sources that I provided for you). If you are unsure how to search for information, go to the library and get help. Another good source, if they have information on your specific topic might be the on-line Journal for International Students (http://jistudents.org/) You may also try using Google Scholar, but remember that you may not get full-text articles there. The library is your best resource. Find some time in the next few days to go to the library and do some searching. First Draft: Thursday, November 12 o This draft must be at least 700 words and must include a reference page for what you have completed so far. The more complete this draft is, the better feedback I can give you. Second Draft: Monday, November 23 (Note that this is during break. You may turn it in earlier if you like. I just wanted to give an opportunity for students to work on it during the break if they wanted to.) I will send them back to you as soon as possible, so you can also work on the final draft during break if you like. Final Draft: Saturday, December 4 at midnight. If any of your drafts are turned in late, you will lose some points on the final grade for the paper. You must be respectful of my time. I will do the best I can, but if you turn drafts in late, you may not get the opportunity to turn in 3 drafts. Advice during research: If you find an article, that you think would be good, download it and save it in your computer. Also make sure to record how you found itespecially the database that you used to find it. You will need this information for your References page of your paper. If you keep careful track of your information, you
