Exercise #1: The Ethnography

￘This exercise asks that you produce an モethnography.ヤEthnography is a genre of writing that uses fieldwork ヨ goes out into the world ヨ to provide a descriptive study of human societies. In this instance, your ethnography will help you see your idea in a real-world setting. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnography)

￘Go to a place that has something to do with the idea you are developing. Listen, observe, think; spend at least an hour there, writing down your observations and thoughts. You are encouraged to car-pool with classmates, and/or use public transportation to get to one of these places. You might even have some fun.

￘Ask yourself questions such as: What is the design of this space? Where is it located? What types of people are here? What do you see when you look around? How is everything set up? The colors? Etc.What does all of this say about this space?

￘Possible Destinations for Ethnographic Analysis:

vEach student is required to write separate papers, with separate ideasreflecting on the idea of space.

vTry to be open-minded as you look for connections to, and examples and manifestations of, the idea youメve been building, the texts weメve been reading, and the broad theme of this project. Write an analysis in which you examine the place youメve visited in relation to our readings, discussions, and your idea. Incorporate rich description that includes people, actions, imagery, and sensory details.

v300-500 words. MLA Format. Works cited, if necessary.
