doneRunning Head; Comparing NBA Policies To NFL Policies Comparing NBA League Policies to NFL League Policies Student’s Name Course Name Date When people come together and form a group, it is necessary that the group set rules to guide the group. This is no different when it comes to football organization. Team joins together and they form a league. Policy is a guide to any decision that involve a group. Policy consist of the principles and procedures used to respond to any situation in the group. The league must be guided by policies so that they can stick to the goal of the organization and ensure protocols are followed since the teams compete between each other. The policy applied by each league differ from one to another depending on the management and the spirit of the league. This paper discusses the compares the policy in both NFL and those in NBA. NBA is based in Canada and United States and it is regarded as a professional league for men initially founded in New York. The league consist of 30 teams. NBA is also among the four professional sports league in both Canada and United states. NBA hails from a merge between Basket Association of America and National Basketball League from August 3, 1949. Regular season in NBA ends on April after opening in October. Though its play of sometimes extend to June, Every team has to play 82 games. Canada has only one team, to mean the 29 teams are from the United State. The name of the first president of the league was Maurice Podoloff and is now used as a label of the trophy for instance NBA MVP trophy. NFL has 32 teams and was formed 1920. NFL has the best-qualified football stars world wide who comes from America. NFL regular season last for 17 weeks that commence in September and runs up to December. Initially it used to be APFA that representing American Professional Football Association but changed name in the year 1922to its current name. From its name we learn that it was intended to raise professional footballers. Polies guide the way the rules are going to be implemented and as such, any rule must be in accordance with the set policies. The National Basketball League considers inclusion as a policy to guide on how the league should include everyone. With the need of making sure that inclusion is embraced, the NBA has a separate body that oversee the implementation of inclusion. NBA has bestowed trust on Global Inclusion Council on the inclusion policies. The body ensures that there are strategies in place to guide, review and catalyze the inclusion policy. The body consist of members from the Women National Basketball Association (WNBA) as well as the NBA staffs. Regarding the inclusion policy NBA has achieved a lot and with the past grading in 2007, the league was graded A- and A+ in 2012. The body outlines how to cultivate inclusion and ensure there is nothing like racial discrimination or any type of issue that may bring difference in the league. The National Football League inclusion policy entails initiatives designed to involve the marginalized people in the league. In effort to achieve inclusion, The NFL Diversity Council is given the mandate to ensure there is equal opportunity for everyone. The council ensures the working environment is ready for everyone and not only for a section of few peoples. The Council alongside NFL executives initiates plans and strategies to pursue inclusivity. This implies that the policy of inclusion in the NFL goes beyond the racial inclusion to the more specific groups of people. It has embraced women engagement and the ethnic minorities to promote inclusion. The NFL league is on the sport for promoting inclusion of women leadership in the league. For instance the inauguration of women leadership in 2011, which is interactive, seems to boost the inclusion policy. For this effort NFL scored a C+ while in the category of hiring people from different racial background, NFL scored A. National Basketball League has financial policies that facilitates the achievements of it goals. Being a league of professional players, NBL financial strategies are aimed at making the profit to manage it expenses. With the 30 teams, each team is supposed to contribute financially in support of the league. Each team as per the last season is worth $1.9 billion. The strategies revolve mainly in making money by selling tickets and merchandising along with the televisions broadcast. As result of these policies, the NBA managed to raise $8 billion during the last season. The national basketball league also has policies that stipulates how the shareholders are supposed to be fined in case they work in any way out of the rues. The body given the mandate to handle issues to do with fines is the commissioner and it oversee that fines are handed out to the organization in case of any misconduct. NFL financial policies stipulates that all the fines collected should go to the programs of the former players and not to the National Football League. Players who attracts fines from their awkward behaviors in the NFL are taken care by the compliance officers. The compliance officer is in charge of code of conduct in the NFL. Though the fines are not supposed to take out the fun of the game, they are inducted to make sure that players do not endanger their fellow payers. The policy provide forms that are supposed to be filed out by the players to acknowledge the awareness of fines. The National football League policy on the code of conduct ensures that players receive the expected guidelines and instructions during the offseason. The department of compliance ensures that all the 32 teams adhere to the rules as stipulated in the policy. The department is also involved in giving advices so as the players can avoid fines and prevent obstruction of instruction in the future. In the policy on the code of conduct, punishments are also specified to make sure that there is clarity in the rules. The gender policy in the NBA stipulates that women involvement in the league must be continuous, significant process and not just a policy for one day. To make this policy hit home the NBA made a major move in filling the position for the head coach whereby for the first time they interviewed Becky Hammond to fill out that vacancy for the head coach. On the other side, the NFL policies on gender are very weak going by the score they had regarding the gender policy in the league. Having a grade C in gender policy says that there is still a lot to be done to achieve and implement gender policies. It is very unfair that the super fans of the NFL are women leading by 45% and at the same time, their leadership in the NFL is not even close to that. This calls for the need to hire more women and increase their role in the NFL. However, Dan Rooney created the diversity rule in NFL but still women are being excluded. The Rooney rule cannot be achieved without including women in it. Apart from hiring Jen Welter in high profile, position there is the need to hire more women in order for the gender policy to be accorded full respect. Clark (2018) argue that, drug policy in NBA and NFL are almost similar in that they both discourage the use of drugs in sports. Looking at the marijuana policy in both leagues there has been countable suspension of players who use marijuana. NBA had two players suspended while NFL had 11 Players suspended with the five of them losing the whole season. The policy focus on maintain the system running under no influence that can deter any performance of the expected task of the player. NFL policies on marijuana are very harsh as compared to those of NBA policies. In fact, for the NBA policies on drugs they only seem to discourage but not to threaten the players’ livelihood. Your sporting activity in NFL can be terminated immediately you refuse to adhere to the drug policy. A suspicion works as a warning and there after you are expelled completely from playing in the NFL. It is very clear now that NFL suspends more player than NBA. NBA test more of it players more often than the NFL. NBA pulls more tricks when it comes to complying with the marijuana policy, in fact Adam Silver who is the commissioner is always down playing the policy not really taking it much serious that the use of marijuana is illegal. Adam Silver rarely get stricter on the drug and substance abuse, instead he always tables excuses on the approach that the manner can be handled. Adam sways the move to prohibit Marijuana use. On the other hand, NFL policy is more concerned especially Roger Goodell who is the commissioner makes sure that no use of the Marijuana in the league or during the league. The crowd control policy in the NFL stipulates that the team should have proper way of addressing the fans who supports them. The policy does not mean to restrict any sort of enjoyment however, it emphasizes on discipline when it comes to noise making and cheering. Far more from the NFL each team should hire professional cheers but not Horrigan’s. Just like in NBA, security personnel are hired to keep the arena in order and to contain any spill that may occur. Controlling the crowd would involve the public addressing system and is for this reason that there is crowd-controlled sounds and waves. On the other hand, NBA has a list of crowd control policies including security checks and guidelines to be followed in their arena. NBA crowd policies also contains the guidelines on the fan code of conduct. The security personnel are also deployed to aids in enhancing the security within the arena. Though there emerge a major difference in the way the crowd control policies are implemented in the two major leagues, there is need to point out that they both recognize the need to enhance peace. Just like business organizations, the sports leagues have been able to put in place policies that foster the sense of order and ensuring fair competition (Singh, 2018). Both the NBA and NFL have a set of policies that dictate their marketing and promotion, junior sports as well as policies in controlling diseases. These policies have certain similarities and differences based on each sports leagues. NBA has grown into a global sports league; most of the success being attributed to the love of sports people have. Despite the love of sports, people do not know about the marketing policies of the NBA. NBA has developed an extension to its brand as a marketing policy. In 1996, the league was able to create the Women Basketball Association as an extension to their brand. The expansion of the brand was a brilliant marketing move as the need to support women in sport was something that most leagues had not taken. Since then, the NBA has created more extensions to its brand. They include; the creation of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association as well as the NBA-China. With these promotions, the NBA has generated more than $550 million each season from the Chinese league (DeKosky, et al., 2018). NBA has built an external reputation that people see everywhere. The NBA brand has developed to have global influence that people cannot forget. They have managed this through billboards as well as the NBA Facebook and in NBA Reddit page, which have more than 745 000 subscribers. Building their visibility has been able to market content as well as gain support from people around the world. Samuelson, (2020) claim that, the NBA has managed to become the best in generating content. These marketing policies are said to be their primary drive of obtaining support and engaging with fans. The USA basketball together with the NBA was able to develop rules that could be used for the junior players. The two parties categorized the junior into four categories ranging from the age of 7-8, 9-11, 12-14, and grade 9-12. These categories were to be exposed to different training lengths based on their grouping. The juniors between the age of seven trains once weekly as compared to the juniors belonging to grade nine to twelve who train up to four times a week. In addition, those belonging to the age bracket of seven to eight were to participate for a maximum of one game a week while those at grade nine to twelve could participate in two games a week. The guideline was developed in a manner that hardens the juniors as they move to the next age category. Unlike the NBA, the NFL has few policies concerning junior sports. In the NFL, juniors are exposed to similar rules to those of adults but presented to less training. (NBA and USA Basketball Announce, 2020) The NFL differs in its marketing and promotion policies with those of the NBA in the following ways. Unlike the NBA, the NFL rewards loyal customers. NFL treats its audience with enthusiasm to encourage them to be part of the NFL. They have been able to create campaigns and promotions for their customers every year. For instance, the NFL gave the dedicated fans 500 bowl tickets as a reward to them. NFL has implemented partnership as its marketing policy. In March 2018, NFL and Nike signed a partnership contract worth $1 billion and was to last for eight years. NFL has sponsors such as Pizza Hurt and Gatorade, both aiming at gaining market and opportunities (Moss, 2019). Sports have to face the challenge of infectious diseases, and much is being done to control those diseases. From 2014, the NFL has been running programs that help in preventing contagious diseases. The programs intend to increase the awareness of players on infectious diseases as well as teaching infection prevention tactics. NFL places significant emphasis on infection, such as influenza, which affects players. NBA league is as well doing a lot in controlling infectious diseases. Just like the NFL, the NBA has programs that help in controlling infections. The league, through charities, help children and the needy in combating diseases across the world. Despite the difference in the marketing policies between the NBA and NFL, both are similar in a unique way. The two have managed to be consistent with their distribution of content on different platforms. Just like the NBA, the NFL uses the same tones in distributing their content. For instance, their social media platforms have maintained the streaming of fresh content across different regions in platforms such as YouTube (Clay, 2019). Policies can be different based on the nature and culture of games, but the NBA and NFL have much to learn from each other. They both can adopt and emulate the best marketing policies from one another to boost sports and talents across the world. Infectious diseases are on the increase, and the sports leagues need to collaborate with other health agencies to ensure the safety of players and audiences.
