Discussion Assignment: Unit 6 Topic # 1: List the three requirements for a substitution reaction to proceed via the SN1 mechanism. Topic # 2: What structural and reactivity factors are necessary for an E2 reaction to occur? Topic # 3: What structural and reactivity factors are necessary for E1 reactions to occur? Guidelines- - Intent - For many of you this is your first graduate level course. The intent of these assignments are to demonstrate and develop an ability to briefly display an understanding on a particular topic. This should be a discussion, it is not intended to be a one sentence answer nor four pages of your notes on a subject. Typically, one to two paragraphs are sufficient to address most topics. - Structures - This is not art class but many discussion assignments will require (or I strongly suggest) you to draw the structures. I give some free ware links to some software in unit 1. However, most anything is acceptable. Many students in the past have drawn on paper and pasted the image into the file or attempted to use power point. I will provide constructive suggestions, not points off, the first few assignments to help you get used to this. If you are not used to drawing molecules, it takes time. -References - Cite your sources. If you use your book, put it as a reference. Just as with the intent above, this is the first graduate level course for many of you. I know most of these facts are not yours but the discussion and how you put them together are. Cites sources where needed. If you use a website, be sure to add the date assessed. I will not be flagging documents for not correctly citing sources for the first few units. It is my intent to help you develop this skill through the discussion assignments. Please use Mc murry, organic chemistry with biological applications (3rd edition) as one of the sources. Chapter 12
