Module 7: Assignment 2-- Observation of the child age 3-6 years
This is your final project. You were to complete an observation of a school age child and provide a written comparison of the child's speech and language skills to the normed charts provided below.
Instructions:
You are to do an observation and a written analysis of at least 4 pages, of a child age 3-6. You will be provided two normed charts. One for Speech development and one for language development. You are to do a comparison of the child with the developmental charts. The question to be answered is "Is the child at, above or below" developmental levels for speech and language. Please keep in mind you are not Speech Pathologists. Do not discuss you opinion with the parents. This is an observation which has the goal of improving your listening skills and knowledge of language development.
Listen carefully for not only how they talk but what kind of language constructs do they use? You are to make sure you include the following:
Child’s identifying information; name, sex, and language used in the household.
Child’s age appropriate speech and language skills (as listed in the chart).
Provide examples of each area you discuss (i.e., semantics- uses concrete nouns such as dog, table).
Child’s inappropriate speech and language skills (below chronological age).
Your conclusions for the child (speech skills are below expectations, language skills are at age expectations) observed.
Be reminded to include BOTH speech and Language skills.
