  • BACKGROUND: A tour guide at the Lake Shasta Dam stated that the dam contains 6.27 million cubic yards of concrete. He also claimed that if a sidewalk, 3 feet wide and 4 inches thick, were made of this much concrete, it would circle the earth at the equator. PROBLEM: Your task is to determine if the tour guide’s claim is correct. Also, if the claim is incorrect: If the estimate is high then determine how thick the sidewalk would have to be in order to use up all of the concrete. If the estimate is low then determine how many cubic yards of cement is still needed to complete the sidewalk.
