Technology and the Environment
PROMPT: This week you had readings by Rachel Carson (Silent Spring" and (“On Population”, in the Readings/Preparations folder) by Thomas Malthus. This week's Discussion Board consists of two different parts.
Thomas Malthus stated in the 1920s that there is a built-in control on the growth of human population. Watch the video listed for this week (provided by Population Connection) that illustrates the changes in world population over the course of human history. Be patient...the patterns become more noticeable as the video continues. Then, complete question 1 in the week’s discussion board:
DISCUSSION BOARD QUESTION 1: Take a stand on this statement: New technology is the best solution to solve current environmental problems. You can Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree, or Strongly Agree with this statement. (note: there is NO "neutral" or “undecided” option).
Debate your stance with your colleagues in a professional manner with science as the basis of your argument. There is no right or wrong answer, and you should feel free to take a stand opposite of what you really believe (just for the sake of making the discussion interesting!). However, whichever position you take, you must support your answer with one outside reference that supports your position. Look to the popular media (news, television, magazines) to find a person or organization that agrees with you and provide an accurate citation in your post so that we can check it out.
DISCUSSION BOARD QUESTION 2: You read the excerpt from Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. In one paragraph using your own words please answer- What is the message that Rachel Carson is trying to convey? also in the paragraph please include your opinion of what you read by Rachel Carson- do you agree? Do you disagree? Please explain.
