Instruction
For this assignment, you have three choices, and in fact, you may suggest an alternative if you have an idea that you feel drawn to. You may e-mail the assignment or hand it in printed out, as you wish.
A. Choose any piece of music, studio or live recorded, personal, commercially distributed, or publically documented on youtube or something like that. Provide a link to the piece and discuss it in your assignment using at least three of the key terms we encountered in chapters 2 and 3, preferably using at least one from each chapter, so that you describe the piece in terms of sound and structure but also from a cultural point of view.
B. Read the essay, included here, "'The Enigma of Arrival': Hybridity and Authenticity in the Global Space" by Peter van der Meer and reflect on how selected points raised in the essay might apply to or illuminate the concept "World Music" as a category, or are otherwise relevant to thinking about musical genres and practices in a global perspective.
C. Read the first two and a half pages (up to the section called "Multiculturalism: a contested concept") of the book introduction, included here, "Opening Up the Canon of Knowledge and Recognition of Difference," and reflect on ways the diversity of musical practices and contexts in the world speaks to a multiplicity of knowledges that are unequally represented in dominant political, social, cultural, and economic structures.
