Assignment Week 4: Reflections of the 12-Step Groups
Overview
Over the span of this course, you have explored different types of groups and therapeutic factors for leading a group. Application Assignment 4 is based on your reflections after attending one “Open” 12-Step meeting.
Although the 12-Step meeting is not considered a counseling group facilitated by a trained mental health specialist, this activity will help you gain perspective about cohesion in a group. You must attend the group in person. You cannot attend groups online or by phone.
Your paper must include the following sections:
Pre-Group – In this section you will discuss your thoughts and feels about attending the group. How did you find it? Why did you chose this group? What do you expect to see or hear while attending?
Observation – In this section you will discuss what you observed during the group. When and where did you go? What were your thoughts? What surprised you? What did you learn?
Discussion – In this section you will discuss your discussion with the group member/leader. What are their thoughts about being a part of this group? What works in the group? What would they like to see different? If they are a leader, what is their philosophy of group leadership? What words of advice do they have for novice group leaders?
Reflection Post Group – In this section you will discuss your thoughts and feelings after attending the group. What did you take from the experience and how will you use this experience in your future group work?
Refer to the attached word document for more details about the assignment, including a list of 12-step meetings that you can attend.
