Instruction
Goal: The goal of this activity is to critically evaluate the differences and similarities in sports information offered via team, league, and player websites and those offered via mainstream media websites. Resources: Access to the web or cable TV Instructions: Choose a contemporary sport, team, or player of interest to you (example: Olympic sports, professional football, college sports, the Philadelphia Eagles, or Barry Bonds). Visit mainstream media websites or cable nets you think would provide up-to-date news on your subject (examples: FoxSports, Yahoo, ESPN, CBSSportsline, The New York Times, SI.com) and see what you find. Next, find a source on the web or via cable as close as possible to the primary source for the information you want. For example, if it’s a player (like Bonds, Tiger Woods, etc.), see if the player has a website. If not, look for the player’s league site). For teams and leagues, go to their home sites or networks (such as the NFL Network or to the website for Penn State’s athletic teams). See what you find. Compare the information: What are the similarities and what are the differences in the breadth, tone, and sourcing? Try to compare information on the same general topics. How much user interaction is invited? What is the value for fans in both types of sources—mainstream media and sites that are directly affiliated with a source? Write a single-spaced, typed (12 pt .) paper (no more, no less), addressing the topics listed above. Consider ideas from the readings we’ve used thus far in the course that might be relevant, and cite at least two ideas from those readings.
