Essay: Maté, Sheff, and Rodríquez
In Tweak, Nic Sheff writes about his addiction to methamphetamines and other drugs. He tells us when his drug use began, describes his experiences as an addict, and provides details about his treatment and relapses. In It Calls You Back, Luis Rodríguez also provides information about his drug use. Do you think the experiences of these men illustrate any of the points made by Gabor Maté in “The Keys of Paradise: Addiction as a Flight from Distress”?
In a well-developed essay (using the lesson handout “Writing Essays” as a guide), please (1) explain Maté’s main points about addicts and addiction and (2) show whether or not you think the experiences of Nic Shefff and Luis Rodríguez illustrate Maté’s argument.
You must compose your own thesis. It should appear in your introductory paragraph and inform the reader about what you will discuss in the body of your essay. Make sure that you state who Maté is (i.e., a physician who studies and treats addiction), what he argues, and whether or not you think his arguments are illustrated by the experiences of Sheff and Rodríguez. Also, since your reader might not be familiar with their texts, remember to explain, briefly, who Sheff and Rodríguez are. (To introduce the reader to Sheff and Rodríguez, you only need to use the information you’ve learned from Tweak and It Calls You Back).
