Instruction
Please follpw the instruction :
Argument
• Make sure that your thesis statement answers the question, rather than simply
restating it.
• Each body paragraph should have a clear topic sentence – think of this as a minithesis statement for that paragraph.
• Use the conclusion to restate your argument and then consider its broader
significance.
Grammar/Style
• History essays should be written in the past tense since you are describing events
and actions in the past.
• People from the past will use out-dated language now considered offensive. Unless
you are quoting directly, avoid using words like “negroes” instead of “AfricanAmericans” or “aliens” instead of “immigrants.”
• Quotations should be introduced and analyzed in your own words. They should
never stand alone as independent sentences. Introduce the speaker/writer, explain
the context of the quote, analyze the meaning of the quote, and then connect it to
your argument.
• In papers of this length, you don’t need to write that you “will consider” or “will
explain” a topic in the essay – just state your argument directly.
• Avoid use big vocabulary words just for the sake of it, especially if you are unsure of
their meaning. Writing that is clear and concise will be more effective. I may write
“WC” above a word in your paper; this means “word choice” and indicates that the
chosen word doesn’t fit the context.
• Avoid sweeping generalizations, like “Since the beginning of time, humans have
loved to travel.” These statements may or may not be true, and either way they don’t
tell you very much.

You do not need to use outside sources for the paper. Your evidence should come from
Foner’s Give Me Liberty, from the class lectures, and from any primary sources that we
study in class. To cite these, you can simply use parenthetical citations indicating the page
number of Foner
