1. Each question will be scored out of 10, and then the final total out of 90. Questions should be about the same length as they would be for the long answer questions (i.e., a couple of paragraphs).
Questions:
1. Think back to the John Oliver videos on FIFA. Based on that information, how might a conflict theorist explain how FIFA works?
2. Deaf culture was in existence long before the disability rights movement drew attention to how ableism is a deeply-engrained feature of society. In what ways does deaf culture challenge notions of disability?
3. In 2016, a new religious organization sprang up in Toronto. The Oasis Network is a growing movement that aims to build a sense of community outside of religious affiliation through human empowerment, intellectual exploration, and humanitarian service. The news media commonly refers to Oasis as Toronto's atheist church. Research online to discern Oasis' major guiding principles. How might a functionalist, using Durkheim's theory of collective effervescence, analyze this new religious movement?
4. From a sociological perspective, why does it matter who owns the media? Answer this question both in a broad sense and using one of the four main theoretical perspectives.
5. Most of today's social movements are considered to be "new social movements." Compared to "old" movements of the past, what is "new" about today's movements is the breadth of their goals, the type of people they attract, their potential for globalization, and the repertoires of action they employ. New social movements also usually struggle for universal citizenship.
Think about a demonstration, march, or rally that you have participated in, witnessed on the sidelines, or saw covered on the news. What social movement was that event part of? In what ways does this movement struggle for universal citizenship?
6. Pure capitalism does not exist, not even in places like the United States. Why not? Be sure to discuss what capitalism is as you write your answer.
7. Explain how IQ tests discriminate against different types of individuals. What can this tell us about our educational system as a whole?
8. Pick any tutorial reading from this exam period. (Note: It CANNOT be the one you wrote your article response about.) Explain the topic briefly, and discuss how viewing the issue in question through the lens of a symbolic interactionist may help us understand the phenomenon.
9. Sociologists certainly have a lot of takes on how the COVID-19 virus affects society. How might a structural functionalist use the COVID-19 crisis to explain structural functionalism itself? Be sure to provide specific examples.
