Below are four short excerpts related to the theme of development and the environment. Review these and select three excerpts that you will discuss in relation to the reading and class lecture on development. The focus of your discussion is not whether you agree or disagree with the positions presented. Nor is this about evaluating the quality of the claims or arguments. Your task is rather to analyze or ‘unpack’ the narrative presented in relation to the course materials. 1) What is the relationship(s) between poverty, development and environment suggested by the author? (HINT: It may not be directly stated) What is emphasized? What is assumed? 2) What are the implications of framing the development‐environment relationship in this way? Does the ‘storyline’ allow or enable certain actions? What solution(s) does the narrative suggest? 3) What aspects are not talked about (compared to other narratives here or ones we talked about in lecture)?

Your answers are to be written in paragraphs. Approx. 500 words (and no more than 600 words)  Responses should be organized like a short essay, similar to the long answer questions on the midterm. A brief introductory paragraph can be helpful, but we do not expect a long intro or conclusion given the limited space. It is more important to separate your ideas into focused paragraphs (approx. 3‐4, though this might vary).  Key will be use of your own voice and own words. You should not depend upon direct quotation of readings, podcasts or lectures, but use paraphrasing instead. You should provide basic APA citation (author‐date method) where you are drawing on an idea from readings or podcasts.  Since you will be only working with course materials, a bibliography will not be required.
