Instruction
Pretend you are a recent (literate) immigrant to the U.S. from one of the southern or eastern European countries listed on p. 696 in Ch. 18 and you are living in a big northern city such as New York, Philadelphia or Chicago. Write a journal entry describing a typical day of work and recreation in your life.* You may reference your arrival in the U.S. at Ellis Island. Your journal MUST include important issues of the day such as unions, labor leaders and labor issues, the rise of feminism. Be sure your entries are geographically accurate (for example, you can refer to Jane Addams and Hull House but remember that she was in Chicago, not New York). If you want to use information about reform movements happening in the West, feel free to do so. Just remember: you are putting YOURSELF into this time period. The journal needs to be pretty detailed--not just a few short sentences and no bullet points. ALL information you use MUST come from somewhere in Ch. 18 of your text--and it is scattered throughout. Using any information not found in Ch. 18 of your text is an automatic ZERO! Your discussion should be a MINIMUM of 300 words.
