In two paragraphs (10 - 14 sentences), describe a talent or skill that you have worked to develop in your life: Tell us a bit about your talent or skill. How did you develop it - did you practice, form a routine, take lessons, etc? How does the process for developing your talent or skill compare with the process of becoming a successful college student? Each paragraph should have 5-7 sentences and be grammatically correct Do not discuss how your talent could help you in college - chances are it won't. Instead, describe how the process of learning that talent and developing that talent compares with the process of becoming a successful college student.

  • A skill or talent that I have worked to develop is dog training. I have only been doing this about one year out of necessity. As my dog has aged she somehow has developed a fear of storms where she shakes and quivers until the storm is over. Her panic attacks are scary because she is elderly and stresses herself out so badly. The first thing I did to develop this skill is research everything I could about training senior dogs. I researched what causes her anxiety, how to overcome it, what other dog owners have done, and what experts have done. From my research, I discovered that one great way to curve this behavior is to build her confidence. So, my next step was training her with many mentally stimulating activities, such as changing our routine frequently. We practiced new activities and tricks multiple times throughout the day, and it was fun! To be honest, she still gets scared of storms, but she is not nearly as bad as she was before her training.

  • This scenario is very similar to how a new student can become a successful college student. Many times the first step is research! You have to do your research so you can understand the content. However, when conducting research it is important to understand all sides of the issue, not just your stance. The next step in becoming a successful college student is practice and application. You may have to change your routine and study (or practice) every day until you feel comfortable with the curriculum. Your brain is like a muscle in the sense that you have to work it out for it to become stronger. You always want to challenge yourself intellectually because learning is power!
