Using appropriate sources in your textbook, Victors and Vanquished: Spanish and Nahua Views of the Fall of the Mexica Empire, answer the following in a thesis-driven essay:
For centuries, the popular understanding of the fall of Tenochtitlan and the end of the Mexica Empire was a simple triumphant narrative of Spanish courage and technology. However, in the past three decades newly discovered sources, especially those written in Indigenous languages after the conquest, and new interpretive strategies have led to a far more nuanced understanding of these events. *********Why is it no longer viable to argue that the Spanish conquered the Mexica with only bravery and superior weapons?***********
Things to consider: Regarding the eventual fall of the Mexica Empire, how do the sources in this collection incorporate the activities and strategies of Indigenous peoples who allied with the Spanish or who joined Tenochca (people of Tenochtitlan) in their defense, with considerable regional and ethnic variations? Additionally, how do the sources in this collection add a new emphasis on common people rather than on the exploits of a few military men? Ultimately, what were the most significant factors that led to the fall of the Mexica Empire?
Be specific, and use the primary source documents as evidence to defend your main argument. You can use the Introduction, the chapter introductions, and the italicized text at the beginning of each document as secondary source material to provide context.
The essay needs to be at least 5 pages.
