You are expected to have a clear and concise thesis statement. Remember, a thesis statement is the basis for your argument. It is not a given; it is something that can be argued against. For example, it is not an argument to say simply that Shakespeare and Kincaid are both interested in the colonial education and then go on to describe it in their respective works. You need to be able to explain how each of these texts deal with this topic, and, to explain why this matters. Avoid simply stating that the two works are “alike and different.” Instead, consider how their differences or similarities are connected to the specific genres of writing (i.e. a play versus a work of autobiographical fiction) or the historical/cultural point of view of the works (e.g. one is written by a white, male, European writer living hundreds of years ago, at the dawn of colonization, the other by a formerly colonized woman of color writing in the late twentieth century, after the end of colonization).
