Rubric for Writing Assignments (100 points maximum):
You will get 50 points for completing the assignment on time, or 40 points if it is up to a week late. After that I will not accept it.
10 points for meeting or slightly exceeding the minimum word count.
10 points for answering the question I asked, including all parts of any multi-part questions.
10 points for a clear expression of your opinion, backed by evidence from the course readings and other materials.
10 points for showing familiarity with the course materials by specific references to films and other visual materials or framed direct quotations from assigned texts, with correct citation (not included in your word count.) “Framing” means you don’t just quote, you also identify the source and explain the significance of the quotation. Correct citation includes the author’s name, the title of the book in italics, and the page number of the quotation, in parentheses following the quotation, like this: (author, title, page number in parentheses.) For film, correct citation means the director’s name, the film title in double quotation marks, and the date, in parentheses upon first mention. Because we are using only assigned texts, you do not need full publication information or a “works cited” page.
10 points for clarity/intelligibility. I don’t expect absolutely perfect grammar, but I must be able to understand your meaning without guessing.
I will take 10 points off if you use (even if you correctly cite) any materials I did not assign for the course. Plagiarism, as always, means a zero for the assignment. Please remember, directly quoted material does not count for your word count.
