Instruction
The objective SUMMARY is only about 20% of the overall essay’s length and should only cover the main ideas of the text in chronological and logical. To be objective means to be accurate, faithful, and unbiased, so do not include personal opinions or comments in the summary. Specific details need to be attributed to the author with parenthetic and/or attributive tags (e.g. According to Lewis “_____” (par. 3).
The RESPONSE, on the other hand, should make up about 50% of your essay and argue your position against the author’s point of view; your argument should be supported by the different kinds of evidence you can find both in the text and from your own personal knowledge. Therefore, you will not be engaging in research, but instead writing based on your position on the issue.
You will read closely, summarize objectively, and respond argumentatively to the issue in the assigned reading.
Your thesis statement should feature a strong response to the central issue in the article and feature two-three subtopics to help organize your body paragraphs and guide your response.
