MHI is a nonprofit, nonreligious, and nonpolitical organization that aims to improve the lives of people who reside in disadvantaged communities. MHI works with communities to identify their cultural assets and apply traditional knowledge to a range of activities. The goal is to assist in the maintenance of culture and the development of economic and social opportunities. MHI currently works in Timor-Leste, a culturally and environmentally rich country in Southeast Asia with a population of 1,172,390 and more than 30 language groups. After nearly 500 years as a Portuguese colony and 24 years under Indonesian occupation, Timor-Leste gained independence in 2002, but still faces enormous challenges. Studies show that participation in the arts has a healing effect on damaged communities and contributes to positive social change (Goldbard, 2009). In partnership with the government of Timor-Leste, MHI obtained a grant to build the Lospalos Center for Traditional and Contemporary Arts and Culture. Work commenced on the site in 2012. The Center will offer arts- and culture-based programs and events for local people and foreign visitors with the goal of developing skills in arts, crafts, and cultural tourism. Recent projects include dance-movement therapy and dance-for-health-and-wellbeing workshops led by Dr. Kim Dunphy, and community music and song-writing workshops led by musician and composer Gillian Howell. The research is clear: Music and dance play a crucial role in the community, both as a creative outlet and a therapeutic agent. The Lospalos Center needs ongoing support.
