1. A friend and you are talking about ethics when she suddenly asks you, “So, what does morality mean to you? Why should I act in the way you propose?” In a critical manner how would you answer her? (Min 150 words, Max 250 words – 20 pts.) Note: When I say “critical” I mean that you give me more than just your opinion – give me reasons to defend your position.
my answer:
For me morality is about the beliefs regarding morally right and wrong actions and morally good and bad persons or characters. Everything one does or says can influence others. Everyone has his or her own set of beliefs, values and practices. As a Christian I was raised to know the difference between right and wrong by following the examples and teachings of Jesus Christ. God says killing is wrong and we must never kill someone, otherwise It would be wrong and immoral to kill others. For me, the teachings of God through the Bible are the rules that I follow, and they determine my morality. Moreover, to function in a society we must obey the laws set in place by our systems. I believe the laws are established for good order and discipline. I think it is important to behave a certain way because we are all responsible for our actions and we should behave a certain way to allow for harmony and a successful society. Furthermore, we have the freedom to make choices in our daily lives. We can choose to learn and become a better person every day or we can choose to not live a life full of happiness or peace without moral standards.
2. Ayn Rand stated that “the moral purpose of a man’s life is the achievement of his own happiness.” In your own words state what she means. Would an ethical egoist agree with her? Why or Why Not? (150-250 words – 20 pts.)

You are a utilitarian ethicist living in the US in 1860 and you have just read a defense given in the presidential debates between Lincoln and Douglas for the continuation and even the growth of the institution of slavery. The reasoning went something like this: “Slavery has been with us since the dawn of man. And in that time it has proven to create the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest number of people possible.” What would you say to this statement? For example: “Slavery should.... because....” (150-250 words – 20 pts.)
