PART 1: Module 2: Discussion 1 -- What is an Individualized Education Program (IEP)?
Chapter 1 of your text describes and analyzes the key elements of the individualized education plan (IEP), the process for developing and updating the IEP, and the requirements for writing effective IEP goals. As well, the issues related to the development of IEP goals based on the developmental needs of those who are culturally and linguistically diverse are discussed.
The following discussion questions are designed to help you more closely examine this concept.
Instructions:
Read Chapter 1, pages 7-13
Provide a written response to the discussion questions below:
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires that an IEP be developed for each student with special education needs. A multidisciplinary team develops, implements, and reviews the IEP, which is both a process and a document.
1. What is an IEP?
2. Describe the process for developing and updating an IEP.
3. Who are the required members of the multidisciplinary team and why is it important for all members to participate in the IEP process?
Submission Instructions:
1. Answer the questions thoroughly, following the APA guidelines when citing references from the book and other sources.
2. Your responses must be a minimum of 3 paragraphs and clearly written without grammatical and/or spelling errors.
3. Students are reminded to use respectful language that is void of any derogatory terms or slurs. These instructions are to be applied to both posts--your initial response and feedback provided to your peers.
PART 2:
Module 2: Reflection 1 -- Article - SMART or Not? Writing Specific, Measurable IEP Goals
No unread replies. No replies.
Our article for this week describes and discusses the most significant components involved in creating the IEP based on the legal requirements included in the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
The following reflection prompts are designed to help you more closely examine these concepts and share your personal feelings and opinions about them as an educator.
Instructions:
Read the article assigned for this week.
Hedin, L. & DeSpain, S. (2018). SMART or not?: Writing specific, measurable IEP goals.
After reading this article:
1. Put yourself in the position of the “special educator” who is responsible for drafting the IEP for an upcoming annual review meeting for one of your students eligible for special education services as a student with a specific learning disability.
2. Using specific examples from the article and your own opinion, describe the most significant components involved in creating an IEP that will meet all IDEA legal requirements and will include realistic expectations for growth during the academic year that it is created for.
Submission Instructions:
1. Respond to the prompts thoroughly, following the APA guidelines when citing references from the video, article, book, and other sources.
2. Your responses must be a minimum of 2 paragraphs and clearly written without grammatical and/or spelling errors.
3. Students are reminded to use respectful language that is void of any derogatory terms or slurs. These instructions are to be applied to both posts--your initial response and feedback provided to your peers.
PART 3:Module 2: Assignment 1 -- Skill Practice Activity - IEP Meetings
In this course, students are expected to apply knowledge of the individual developmental, academic, and social needs of K-12 students with disabilities to develop comprehensive IEPs. These IEPs should include a student’s present level of academic and social performance, and goals based on the student’s developmental needs, to include the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse individuals across diverse settings.
Because this course is being offered during the summer when schools are closed and during the covid-19 global pandemic, the requirements for this particular assignment have been altered.
Instructions:
1. Each student will choose one of two possible dates, during week two of this course, to participate in a live synchronous session via WebEx, where you will take turns asking questions to a panel of ESE IEP experts from Broward County Schools in Florida. I WILL DO THE INTERVIEW AND POST THE RECORDED VIDEO LINK FOR YOU TO COMPLETE THE REMAINING OF THE ASSIGNMENT. THE INTERVIEW WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE 8TH AND THE VIDEO WILL BE POSTED SHORTLY AFTER.
2. I will begin each session with introductions.
3. You will inquire about the continuum of service delivery options available in this school district for students with disabilities.
4. You will inquire about the procedures a school must follow when a student is suspected of having a disability and is referred for special education services.
5. You will inquire about the procedures for conducting Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings in the schools the experts are connected to.
6. Find out who gets invited to IEP meetings and who usually attends IEP meetings in the schools (parents, special education teacher, general education teacher, the student, etc…).
7. Find out the procedure for obtaining parent participation in the development of the IEP and what happens if parents cannot attend an IEP meeting.
8. Find out if students are encouraged to attend their own IEP meeting and if so, are the students provided with assistance in preparing for IEP meetings.
9. Inquire about the requirements for the "present level of performance" section of the IEP document.
10. Inquire about the requirements for annual goals and short term objectives in the IEP document.
11. Inquire about how it is determined that a student qualifies for particular "related services".
12. Inquire about how the special education professional leading the IEP team, communicates and works collaboratively with the other teachers, related service providers, and family members. (The responses to prompt #12 will be used to complete the Module 7 Discussion: Collaboration and the IEP Meeting).
(The responses to prompts 13 - 15 will be used to complete the Module 5 Discussion: The RTI Process).
13. Inquire about the Response to Intervention (RTI) / (MTSS) procedures in most public schools in the District.
14. Inquire about the types of interventions used and the duration of the interventions.
15. Inquire about the quality, effectiveness, and consistency of (RTI) / (MTSS) procedures, throughout the school district.
***You will be allowed to ask the experts any additional questions that you feel would assist you in clearly understanding the IEP process.
Submission Instructions:
1. Submit a 1-2-page written summary of your "interview the experts" experience to include answers to all of the prompts above.
2. The written summary should be clearly written without grammatical and/or spelling errors and should follow APA guidelines.
