Instruction
This module introduces students to the function and operation of the light microscope. The structures of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells are described including membranes, cell walls and eukaryotic organelles.

Module-level Objectives
As a result of the instruction in this module, students will be able to:
1. Describe the use and function of the microscope. (CO #1)
2. Recognize terms associated with prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. (CO #1, #2)
3. Describe the cell structures including membranes and organelles. (CO #1, #2)
4. Identify cell structures under a microscope. (CO #2, #4)
(CO = Course Objective. This demonstrates the alignment from the module objective to the course objective[s].)
This module covers the ways cells process chemicals to grow. This includes how cells acquire and use energy, selectively transport material into and out of the cell, and modify chemicals through the use of enzymes.

Module-level Objectives
As a result of the instruction in this module, students will be able to:
1. Recognize terms related to energy and describe how cells acquire, transform and expend it. (CO #1, #2)
2. Describe how cells use enzymes to facilitate reactions. (CO #2)
3. Describe important ways cells control passage of material in and out of membranes. (CO #2)
4. Demonstrate how factors like temperature and pH can influence enzyme activity. (CO #2, #4)
(CO = Course Objective. This demonstrates the alignment from the module objective to the course objective[s].)
