Assignment is based on the story of Genie the wild child. Video link below. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3i5x05

Date Posted: 28/07/2020
Category: Psychology
Due Date: 28/07/2020
Instruction
4. BIG QUESTION IN CHILD PSYCHOLOGY: The case of Genie examines the "nature vs. nurture" controversy. "Nature" is the "you're just born that way" part of development and includes the genetic features that people inherit from their parents. "Nurture" refers to the way people are affected by their environment, and includes such factors as upbringing, training, and education. After reading the article and watching the video – discuss your thoughts on this big developmental question – was Genie a product of Nature or Nurture or interaction of both? Be sure to include a behavioral example to support your claim. POLICY ISSUE – Ethics in Psychological Research with Children 5. This program presents an emotionally charged debate among the specialists who argued about the cause of Genie's condition and the best treatment to use with her. How did this documentary affect you? In 2 -3 paragraphs describe how you feel about the way Genie's parents and the psychologists treated her. How would you have modified her treatment by the psychologists and foster parents? We have defined psychology as the scientific study of human behaviors. When using human beings to study human behavior – researchers must follow a set of ethical guidelines. There are considerations for working with vulnerable populations – i.e. Children. The guidelines and considerations are below. Choose ONE ETHICAL PRINCIPAL and discuss how the researchers working with Genie may have violated the ethical guideline. Make sure to provide evidence from the case video and/or article. PRINCIPLE ONE: Minimizing the risk of harm – research should not harm participants – physically, psychologically, socially or economically. PRINCIPLE TWO: Obtaining informed consent and assent - participants should understand that (a) they are taking part in research and (b) what the research requires of them. Information should be provided in primary language and language person can understand based on chronological or developmental age. In the case of children – parents must provide consent AND the child must provide assent. PRINCIPLE THREE: Protecting anonymity and confidentiality – researcher must guarantee private and personal information will remain protected by removing all identifiers. PRINCIPLE FOUR: Avoiding deceptive practices – participants should be told what will be happening during the informed consent process unless that information would compromise the research and in this situation, after conclusion of research – participants are debrief and again asked for consent to use data collected during the research study. PRINCIPLE FIVE: Providing the right to withdraw - participants should have the right to withdraw at any stage in the research process. When a participant chooses to withdraw from the research process, they should not be pressured or coerced in any way to try and stop them from withdrawing.
