Final Exam (feel free to reference any texts since our midterm, week five and after; refer to syllabus for text listing. Don’t use research or secondary sources)
Part 1: Write an essay (at least 4-5 developed paragraphs) in response to one of the following questions (100 points):
Referring to at least two texts we’ve covered since midterm, demonstrate how and why 20th century literature combines the serious and the trivial/comical. Does focusing on serious themes in a comical or absurd fashion seem appropriate to you? Why or why not?
In terms of theme and technique, what makes 20th century and contemporary literature unique? How do these texts differ from their predecessors? Refer to at least two texts covered since midterm in your response.
Part 2: Write a well developed paragraph or two in response to two of the following; reference specific texts in your response (50 points; 25 points each):
Confessional poetry.
Communication themes in mid-late twentieth century American literature.
Gender/women’s issues raised in contemporary literature.
