Instruction
This semester we have investigated the interrelationship of the Social Order, the forms of Deviance that it creates, and the efforts by the social order to Control the forms of deviance. Deleuze’s short piece argues that we have undergone a shift in social control, see if you can capture the meaning of his writing by stripping it down to its poetic essence.
Part 1: You are required to create 3 blackout poems, where the text of the poem is not redacted, and everything else is. You are to create 3 poems, one for each section of Delueze’s Postscript on the Societies of Control. These sections are: 1. Historical, 2. Logic, and 3. Program. Try your best to capture in your poems the theme of the section. Be creative in your style. Below are some examples, but feel free to do some research online to see the many, many possibilities. You will be graded based on the poem's coherence (it needs to make sense), relevance to a topic (what are the poems saying about social control), creativity/clarity/presentation. Your poems should not be more than 25 to 30 word for each of the three poems.
Part 2: In a few paragraphs, explain in your own words what Delueze's article means. Interpret it for the reader. This part of the paper can refer to why you created the poems you did and refer to the course material.
Part 3: In your final paragraph, write about what your understanding of deviance was when you started the course and what your understanding of deviance is now. What is the importance of studying deviance today?
