Dialogue is a method that we can use in order to gain knowledge about philosophical subject matter. You can observe this method being used by Dr. Tyrone Wells in the "Let’s Chat" video about mathematics. With this example in mind, (1) describe what you observe about this method. For example: Does it seem like this dialogue has a goal? What kinds of “moves” does Dr. Wells make in order to advance the conversation? If you were to describe the approach to someone who had never seen it, how would you describe it? Use specific examples from the dialogue to support your observations. Then, (2) reflect on what you’ve observed. For example: What feelings or thoughts do you have about what these guys are up to? What is the value of this kind of dialogue? Can you think of a way in which you might use what you’ve observed? (See the rubric for additional ways to reflect on the material).
One of our goals as critical thinkers is to be independent thinkers, not under the control of politicians, advertisers, our employers, or other sectors of society. Only when we can think for ourselves are we truly free. In an ideal world, our beliefs are determined not by our emotions, but by reasons. In real life, though, this is far from simple. Try to think of a belief that you are deeply committed to and hold very strong feelings about. What sorts of emotions arise in relation to this belief? Why do you think it is so important to you? Is it connected to some aspect of your personal experience or identity? If it were shown that this belief is not supported by the evidence, would you change your mind? What would it take to persuade you to modify your belief?
