Assignment Instructions:
- Select a person to interview who: works for a for-profit retail store company AND has been with their employer for at least one year AND has insight to the sales, marketing, finances, management, policies and procedures, and supply chain of their retail store . This can be a family member, friend, neighbor, etc. This person must be familiar with their employer and the topics covered in the SLOs stated above, and be willing to share that information with you, so that you have sufficient information to complete this assignment. You will not need to include their name, but will need to include the retail store name and the information that they share about the store. It is OK if the person you interview no longer works for this employer, as long as they have recent experience of working there within the past three years, and have knowledge and information about the workplace to provide sufficient input on the questions below.
- Interview the person you select and ask them the following questions. Take notes on their responses, as you will need to submit these as a reference. You may conduct the interview virtually. Interview Questions:
a. What is the name of your employer? What is your job title? How long have you been with this employer?
b. How does your store set sales goals? How do the sales goals get communicated to employees? How often does this happen? (SLO 1&7)
c. Tell me about the policies and procedures at your store. How does the company enforce its polices and procedures? Tell me about a time at your store that you had to deal with an ethical issue. What happened? What was the outcome? Did you feel that it was managed correctly? (Note: please do not include names for these responses, just describe the situation). (SLO 2)
d. How does your store manage change and communicate that to employees? (SLO 3)
e. Does your store attempt to reach/serve different customer bases? Why or why not? How does your store promote its products to customers? How does it increase sales and profits? (SLO 4&5)
f. Tell me about the supply chain for your store's products. In other words, how do the products that you sell get to your store? How do they get to the end customer? (SLO 6)
g. In what ways does your store use technology? How does this impact the customer? How does this impact sales? (SLO 8)
h. Student: Come up with your own question to ask your interviewee.
- Submit a 3-4 page paper, double-spaced, numbered #1-8 to discuss each of the SLOs, using Times New Roman 12 point font, 1" margins, to:
1. The focus of your paper is to convey your understanding of our eight Student Learning Outcomes (see above) and how they relate to the retail store in your interview. Give a summary and analysis of the interview you conducted (including the name of the retail store) and tie the interview comments to what you have learned about retail management and the eight SLOs covered in our course. Number your paragraphs #1-8 for each of the SLOs that you discuss.
2. If you were the manager of this retail store, state one thing you would do to strengthen their sales. Explain why and how you would do this and how it would increase sales.
3. Your paper should convey a strong understanding of the SLOs and retail management. Use references and cite your sources. Remember to number #1-8 for the paragraphs where you discuss the SLOs.
4. Type up the interview comments for questions a-h, and include these at the end of your paper as a reference. This does NOT count toward your 3-4 page paper, it is simply a reference.
Check your grammar and spelling, and use paragraphs to break-up your thoughts. Number your discussion on the SLOs using #1-8 for each SLO discussed. Include references where used and remember that your paper should be in your own original thoughts and wording. You will be graded on providing in-depth critical thinking and support for your responses, clearing addressing the assignment objectives, and using correct grammar and spelling so that your paper flows well and can be easily read and understood. See grading rubric below.
