Exercise #1: (place/setting)
ALWAYS upload your assignments in PDF and as one single document
Prepare for the exercise by making a list of 3 places you know very well, then add a list of specific sensory details you associate with each place. Remember that we have 5 senses, so you need to write a list of what you see/saw, what you hear/heard, what you smell/smelled. In order to add how the place tastes/tasted and feels/felt (touch), you may have to work with similes (use ". . . taste/tasted like. . ." and ". . . feels/felt like . . .")
Now pick one of these places and write a short paragraph answering the question “What was it like?” (using the previous lists of sensory details you associate to this place). In order to make things a bit more interesting and challenging, I am asking you to imagine that there is a piece of trash that has nothing to do with this place (someone threw/left an emptly cup, lid, plastic or paper bag, etc.) and incorporate it in the setting. Remember to use full sentences and to edit your work.
The goal of this exercise is for students to realize the importance of using the five senses (or most of them) in writing a setting AND to start thinking about the relation between setting and mood, or how setting creates a certain mood. For instance, adding trash to a setting creates a certain mood, right?
POST THE SHORT PARAGRAPH ONLY, along with your REFLECTION on completing this exercise (what aspect of the exercise was most challenging, tips, etc.)
