For this discussion, we will focus on the digestive system. You may find it helpful to review pages 269-270.
As a dietitian, I have worked with patients who opted for surgery for the treatment of obesity (Bariatric surgery). The main two types of surgery performed are gastric bypass and gastric sleeve. Both of these surgical interventions change the digestive processes resulting in weight loss but also requires significant changes in eating habits.
For this assignment, I want you to use what you learned about the digestive system and apply that to digestive process for a person who has had gastric bypass surgery. For the rest of their life, a person who has had gastric bypass surgery will have to chew each bite of food 30 times. There are a number of reasons for this. Some of these are to prevent nausea, vomiting, and blockages. However, there are also a couple of reasons that relate to the process of digestion!
To earn full points for this activity, explain why a gastric bypass person will always need to chew each bite of food about 30 times IN TERMS OF THE DIGESTIVE PROCESS. Do not say to prevent nausea, vomiting and blockages. I want you to apply what you learned about digestion to a real situation! Think about how food is digested and how that process is changed with gastric bypass.
