This week’s readings introduced the six-step process for developing, and then implementing American public policy. First, select a public policy of your choice that has been implemented within the last five years at the local, state, or federal level. Next, conduct your own research on the historical origins of this public policy, which should include the following:
Indicate the original impetus for proposing the current policy.
Identify the developmental timeline for this public policy—i.e., from start (advocacy) to finish (actual implementation), indicate the length of time for the process.
Document how this particular public policy worked its way through each of the six distinct steps of problem identification, agenda setting, policy making, budgeting, implementation, and evaluation.
Be sure to identify individual actors and/or interest groups who played a key role in the advocacy for/against the establishment of this particular public policy.
Determine if there were any non-governmental institutions (i.e., universities, academic think tanks) who provided their technical/programmatic/subject matter expertise in the development of this policy.
Identify the financial impact this new public policy will have on the next annual budget and the specific type of programmatic funding/public resources this policy received, once it is formally approved.
Determine if there have been any subsequently documented metrics or cost-benefit analysis conducted to evaluate the overall effectiveness of this public policy since the actual implementation date. If so, what were the initial results?
Offer a critical assessment of a particular action, proposal, or implementation rule, from the macro-level view that you would have addressed differently if you were involved in the development/implementation of this public policy. Indicate what you would have done differently.
Due to the limited scope of this assignment, if a state or local-level policy is selected, state/local professional media sources are acceptable. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included.
Length: 5-0 pages, not including title and reference pages
