This discussion part just based on the result I found analyzing this data (I posted below) in order to determine:
-Exercise-induced changes in cardiovascular (heart rate: HR) and respiratory (peak expiratory flow rate: PEFR) parameters
- Effect of a selective ß1-adrenoceptor antagonist on the above parameters.
=> please base on those data and follow carefully the criteria (I posted below too), to discuss these two questions
1) What is the effect of exercise on PEFR
Increase due to exercise
Reasons: Need more oxygen in blood during exercise. Exercise increases H+ and Co2, stimulates chemoreceptors to stimulate SNS, activation of adrenal medulla, releases adrenaline to activate B2 adrenoceptors
2) What is the effect of atenolol on exercise induced changes in PEFR
Atenolol will have in little or no effect
Reasons: Atenolol is selective for B1 so will not bind to B2 receptors in the lungs, therefore not changing PERF during exercise.
