For this assignment, you’ll choose a subject that interests you and evaluate (review) it in a 3-page essay. Good topic categories include movies or TV shows, video games, various types of products &/or services, an app or software program, website, books &/or individual stories. You need to choose your topic early, so that you can spend time familiarizing or re-familiarizing yourself with it before the prewriting and first draft are due. (*Note: If you want to write about a book, pick one you’ve already read. And if you choose a product, make sure it’s complex enough for an essay-length review.)

Instruction
The purpose of your review is to evaluate your subject—to present your judgment about its overall quality, and to support that judgment convincingly. Good evaluations are based on specific criteria—aspects of a given subject that most people base their judgment on. For a movie or TV show, these might be the plot, the casting, or the special effects. For a laptop, they might include the battery life, screen size or pre-loaded software. You’ll need to make these criteria clear, and then give lots of specific examples, descriptions or other details for support. All evaluations & reviews include some overall description of the subject (the main plot of a film or book, the design of a car or a toaster), but the challenge here is to remember that your main purpose is not simply to describe the subject but to evaluate it. Your review may be mainly positive, or negative; however, remember that things are seldom either all good or all bad. To be fair, you should consider both the strengths and weaknesses of your subject.
