Assignment 1- Directions: For one point participation select a discussion question to respond to (specify the correlating number of the question you are answering in the subject line of your post). You may also receive participation by elaborating or commenting on a classmate's post. In order to receive credit, your response must be a minimum of one paragraph (3-5 sentences) and critically analysis the narrative with the guiding questions in mind. It is highly encouraged that students include textual evidence to support their claim.
1.) Identify passages in the excerpt where Irene and Clare discuss passing. Quote the text (separate from your paragraph analysis) and interpret the meaning. Why?
2.) What are differences between the characters Irene and Clare? How does Larsen present the dynamics of their relationship? How do they interact together?
3.) What do you think Larsen's intent was in writing this story? Although you were only assigned a short excerpt from the beginning of the novel, what are some ideas you have about where the story is going? (Incorporate textual evidence to support your idea).
4.) Do you feel passing is still relevant today? Explain.
Assignmnet 2-Reading Reflection Opportunity (Nella Larsen)
Responses should be ONE page in length, double spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman font (or similar formatting). There will be five opportunities for students to complete the reading reflection journals OR a quiz, therefore students have a choice in selecting the readings they wish to respond to. The Reading and Assignment Schedule indicates the weeks throughout the semester that a reading reflection journal may be submitted. In the reflections students should write about their personal reaction to the literature. This may include discussing the theme of the work, the author’s style or tone, or any connections to previously read literature, lectures, or discussions. PLEASE, proofread and edit before submitting.
