Instruction
Task: Examine the Athenian democracy. Choose only one historical question. This is key. Some students make the mistake of trying to combine both questions. Stay focused by concentrating on one of these historical questions.
Topic 1: How democratic were the Athenians of the Classical Age? (Consider if they were very democratic, or not so democratic, or instead practiced a nuanced democracy.)
With that in mind, who was included and who was excluded? Who benefitted from democratic reforms and who did not?
Step 1: Your answer to one of the questions in a complete sentence will be your thesis statement. Just some suggested factors (claims, depending on selected topic) to support your thesis: Cleisthenes reforms, citizen, identity, government roles, helots, metics, gender, assembly, voting, debating, courts, juries, etc.
