ESSAY TOPIC : 6) Discuss the extent to which one might consider Gloucester a secondary tragic hero through his participation in Aristotelian conventions. Why is he only a lesser tragic hero, not a main one (i.e., what conventions does he not participate in fully)? Why did Shakespeare create two parallel tragic heroes? How does it make the play better than if he had only one plotline and one tragic hero?
- Thesis must be able to show why Gloucester can be seen as tragic hero by determining how he fits into the Aristotelian
conventions of a tragic hero and second, thesis must also show why Gloucester is a SECONDARY TRAGIC HERO ( so he must not in some way fit in the conventions like Lear)(what conventions he is missing that makes him a tragic hero). So thesis has to have the two parts in it.
( use quotations from king Lear to prove your point)
First body: shows how Gloucester fits in the conventions of a tragic hero
(So, you would have to
decide which conventions you would like to use for the first part. Think which ones are critically important, are
necessary, to being a tragic hero, and which ones he fits particularly well.)
2nd body: shows how Gloucester does not fit in the conventions of a tragic hero, not as well as Lear
How to make and write the introduction and thesis: Look in the file called planning sheet 1 (IMPORTANT)
how to structure a body paragraph: look in the file called planning sheet 2 ( IMPORTANT)
Conclusion:
- Restate the thesis
- summarize body paragraph one
- summarize body paragraph two
- a concluding sentence( trying to impress the reader)
