Please complete/edit these hypotheses with cited mechanisms (these are the ones you will be using in the article):
1) When ants are given the choice between a carbohydrate and a protein, the abundance of ants would be greater with the carbohydrates. This is because...
2) if ground temperature is related to ant abundance at a mixed food source (carb/protein) then we would expect that if temperature goes down then ant abundance goes up because...
ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS:
For this assignment:
● You will evaluate a minimum of 2 hypothesized relationships (these can be the
relationships submitted for your Hypotheses worksheets).
○ Your methods section will describe how you collected the data that is included in
your hypotheses (i.e. this section should not include methods for the variables that
you are not reporting in your results). Further details can be found in Part 4 of
Appendix I.
○ Using the class data collected by all students and the statistical tests conducted in the
analysis lab, you will test 2 of the relationships and report your results in writing.
○ Your results will also be displayed in at least 2 figures . The expectation is a minimum
of one figure (graph) for each of your hypotheses (another way to think of it: each
relationship or comparison should have a figure).
■ Figures should be done as described in Part 9 of Appendix I and further described
in “A Short Guide to Writing About Biology”.
● Overall, you should include with your assignment : a corrected/edited list of
Hypotheses, and a Methods, Results (written results and figures at the end!), and
Literature Cited section. Place your Figures at the end of your draft .
○ The correctly formatted citation for the lab manual can be found on the inside title
page. Remember to use proper in-text citations for the lab manual.
Example:
Relative humidity was measured using... following the procedures outlined in
Biological Sciences Department (2018).
Or:
This study was conducted in the North Saskatchewan River valley in Edmonton,
AB, Canada which is in the Western Hemiboreal region (Biological Sciences
Department 2018).
The assignment is Individual Work and must be typed with:
● no less than 11 pt font,
● double spaced,

● Typed and submitted as a .doc, .docx or .pdf to Blackboard,
● 4 pages (double spaced) of text maximum (not including figures or citations)
● printing on scrap paper or double-sided printing is encouraged (just clearly mark
the scrap side)
