For instance, the Dadaist artwork by Marcel Duchamp exhibited here demonstrates the attempt to react to an incomprehensible war in a meaningless way. The events of World War I transpired in a modernist world. Modernism set the stage for the machine e.g., the steam engine, the train, the automobile, and the airplane and these innovations inspired speed, mobility, and technological advances.
