Journal Article:
Students will be required to analyze an academic journal article that relates to topics covered in the textbook. For example, you may choose an article about consumer behavior, pricing strategies, promotional activities, distribution, segmentation strategies, etc. (see weekly assignments topics below and textbook for complete list of acceptable topics). Please choose your article from one of the following journals: Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Advertising Research, and Journal of Consumer Behavior. Limit your journal article selection to the last 5 years (2015 – 2020). The selected article must be at least 15 pages in order to qualify for this assignment.
There are generally two types of articles contained in academic journals: theoretical or original research. Theoretical articles explore (marketing) concepts and ideas, many times adding to frameworks and models used in the discipline. Original research papers present findings from a specific study done by the authors. A number of research articles that support the same findings can lead to the development of new theories or refine existing theories. Most articles you come across will be in the original research area. A strictly theoretical article is not as common.
When writing your paper please present the following info as it relates to the articles:
Bibliographic citation for article including author(s), article date, article name, journal name, volume/issue, page numbers at beginning of article discussion.
Purpose of article: In an original research article, this may or may not be stated as hypotheses.
Methodology: Only applicable if research article; not applicable for theory article.
Sample size and description of sample: Only applicable if research article; not applicable for theory article.
Findings (for research paper); theories or arguments presented (for theory paper).
Conclusions and personal assessment of content
When presenting this info, it is best to use the headings listed above to guide your discussion. Paper should be 4-6 double-spaced pages.
Journal Article Considerations
What was the sample size? Is this representative of the larger population?
What variables were held constant? Was there a control?
What factors might affect the outcome?
What is the purpose of the study? What questions were asked?
How did the study address these questions?
What assumptions did the author make?
What were the major findings?
What surprised you or struck you as interesting?
What questions are still unanswered?
The introductory paragraph summarizes the background information and purpose of the research (specific questions the study researched).
Then, explain the methods that were used to investigate the research questions (use past tense).
Mention the major results of the study (use past tense).
State what the author of the study learned.
Critique: A Critical Review and Assessment of the Article
Include a summary as well as your own analysis and evaluation of the article.
Do not include personal opinions.
Be sure to distinguish your thoughts from the author’s words.
Focus on the positive aspects and what the author(s) of the study learned.
Note limitations of the study at the end of the essay:
Do the data and conclusions contradict each other?
Is there sufficient data to support the author’s generalizations?
What questions remain unanswered?
How could future studies be improved?
A description of the study’s participants
Include number of participants/sample size/number of groups used
Provide diagnoses or pertinent characteristics of participants
Briefly describe participant selection & assignment to condition(s)
Identification and description of the relationship between the independent and dependent variables within the study
Define independent variable(s)
Define dependent variable(s)
Discuss if a functional relationship exists between the independent and dependent variables
Introduction
Did the researchers identify a socially significant problem as the focus of the study?
Did the researchers develop potential solutions to the problem after conducting a thorough review of past research?
Did the proposed study include a thorough, current, and relevant literature review?
Did the introduction guide the reader to the rationale for the study? Was the rationale justified?
Methods
Did the researchers detail procedures enough for replication?
Were the participants, setting, observational times, data collection methods, measurement of the independent and dependent variables, and experimental conditions described?
How did the experimenters monitor possible side effects and adverse effects on participants throughout the study?
How did the experimenters account for experimenter bias and reactivity?
Were treatment integrity and inter-observer agreement addressed within the study?
Were measures taken to reduce possible confounds within the study?
Results
How did the experimenters attempt to demonstrate a functional relationship between the independent and dependent variables? What procedures did the experimenters use to strengthen the correlation between these variables?
Did the experimenters graph the results? Did the information in the graphs represent the written description of the results?
Discussion
Did the experimenters summarize the results and provide reasonable interpretations of the results based on the data and the experimental design?
Did the experimenters relate the results back to the Introduction?
Did the experimenters discuss any implications or limitations of the study or experimental design?
Did the study provide socially significant results?
