Part 1: Module 1: Discussion 1 -- Self-Determination
Chapter 1 of your text provides the definition of self-determination, how it has been a guiding principle, and how it has been a fundamental part of life for all citizens, including individuals with disabilities.
The following discussion question is designed to help you more closely examine the concept of self-determination.

Provide a written response to the discussion question below:
Discuss why self-determination needs to begin at the primary level and why that is important for self-determination at the middle and secondary levels, especially for students with disabilities.
Submission Instructions:
Answer the question thoroughly, following the APA guidelines when citing references from the book and other sources. Your responses must be a minimum of 3-4 sentences and clearly written without grammatical and/or spelling errors. Students are reminded to use respectful language that is void of any derogatory terms or slurs. These instructions are to be applied to both posts--your initial response and feedback provided to your peers.

Part 3: Module 1: Assignment 1 -- Research Transition Programs
In this course, students are expected to evaluate the current state of the transition process in the surrounding school districts and its impact on the quality of life for students with disabilities in our community, including the post-secondary school years.
Instructions:
Students will research special day school and high school programs in the United States, specifically designed to teach independent living skills, functional academics, and job skills to students with significant special needs such as intellectual disabilities and autism. You will research special education programs designed to prepare individuals, ages 14 - 22 with significant disabilities, as they transition from the secondary level to the post-secondary level. The research should also focus on parents’, students’ and professionals’ level of satisfaction with these programs.
