Instruction
Part 1: You will use operant conditioning to modify the behavior in the following scenarios.
Juan is in the 7th grade and he continually lies to his friends. His parents want to get him to stop, and they have tried talking with him about it, but that hasn’t worked. Using operant conditioning, what else can be done besides adding a punishment such as spanking or grounding him?
Part 2: How can Pavlov's Classical Conditioning theory explain obesity and the obesity crisis in America? Students must use the terminology specific to classical conditioning. Think about the types of triggers in one's environment.
Part 3: In horror movies, sexually arousing images of women are sometimes paired with violence against women. Based on classical conditioning principles, what might be a negative impact this pairing has had for our society?
Part 4: In TV shows and movies from Hollywood, society often sees both characters of Hispanics who are unintelligent, aggressive, or committing drug crimes and violent African American men. Based on classical conditioning principles, what might be a negative impact this pairing has had for our society?
Part 5: Give an example of a behavior of your own that has been conditioned. Explain it thoroughly. Students must identify the learning theory (classical conditioning, operant conditioning, observational learning) and use the terminology associated with the theory.
