Instruction
The purpose of this assignment is for course participants to develop a thorough understanding of service
blueprinting by analyzing one service process for a company and graphically capturing the process on paper. Focus
on one service encounter (e.g., serving a customer at a restaurant) rather than an entire operation (e.g., a ski resort).
The aim is to critically look at the process in depth to understand the steps and pitfalls rather than a broad view
missing critical details.
Steps in the process
1. Choose a local service provider, or a business that has a significant service component. Please focus on one
specific company. Identify one service delivery activity common to the operation (i.e., do not try map
everything the company does).
2. Read Chapter 8 in the course text. Carefully study the section titled “Service Blueprinting.” Also, read Guide to
Written Assignments and the Writing Rubric to understand how writing assignments should be constructed and
how they will be graded for this class. This assignment is a professional report. Write as an outside consultant
reporting to company management. Do not write from the perspective of personal experience or an employee.
The information presented needs to be objectively presented, not written in first person (do not write “I think”),
and carefully follow the writing guidelines (no contractions, a noun must follow “this,” and do not use the word
“it”).
3. Create a complete blueprint of the service that you have chosen. Each blueprint should include the components
listed in Chapter 8 and discussed in class. All lines should be labeled clearly, and arrows should be included in
the blueprint to indicate the order of activities. The blueprint should include at least four “boxes” of support
processes. Potential “bottlenecks” or “fail-points” in the service delivery process also should be identified. The
easiest way is to create the blueprint in PowerPoint first and then paste the figure into your report as an
Appendix.
4. In addition to the actual blueprint, write a 3- or 4-page paper (double-spaced) that addresses the following issues.
a. Describe why you selected this organization to blueprint (a short paragraph should suffice). The business
history or background about the owners is not needed because the intended audience is the company’s
management team.
b. Describe three key elements of physical evidence revealed in the blueprint and discuss how they influence
the customer’s experience.
c. Identify and describe at least three potential bottlenecks (points in the process where backups or slow
delivery may occur) and/or fail-points (points in the process where problems may occur).
d. Suggest possible solutions/alternatives to address these potential problem areas.
